1. Natalie Dormer
For some actors Game of Thrones launched their careers. For others, it was just one more stepping stone on the path to greatness. Some had pretty significant roles, but were killed off anyway.
Others had small but memorable roles and died in order to further the plot. Have you ever wondered what happened to those actors who haven’t made it to Season 7? Look no further, we’ll be taking a look at where 24 of these actors went after their characters were killed off in Game of Thrones.
Natalie Dormer is a British actress who played Margaery Tyrell in Seasons 1-6 of Game of Thrones. Fierce and clever as she was, Margaery finally met her match when Cersei trapped her in the Sept of Baelor and burned her to death with hundreds of other people in Season 6. Where is she now?
2. Finn Jones
After Season 6, Dormer went on to voice the character Dr. Lexi T’Perro in the new “Mass Effect: Andromeda” game. She’s also played several characters in productions that haven’t come out yet, including The Professor and the Madman, Patient Zero, and In Darkness.
When Margaery Tyrell’s brother, Loras, met the same fate as his sister in Season 6, it was actor Finn Jones’ turn to exit the show, too. Loras Tyrell, the Knight of Flowers, seemed to be a pretty insignificant character in the show until Seasons 5-6, when he was captured by the High Sparrow. That didn’t end well for him, despite the Tyrells’ best laid plans.
3. Jonathan Pryce
Finn Jones has met a much fate than his dead character, though! He’s gone on to play Danny Rand in Marvel’s Iron Fist, now showing on Netflix.
Jonathan Pryce played the High Sparrow – the fanatic religious leader who sought to rule Kings’ Landing with militaristic extremism. We liked this guy, and then we really, really hated him. Cersei Lannister also burned the High Sparrow in the wildfire explosion in the Sept of Baelor at the end of Season 6.
4. Roger Ashton-Griffiths
Since his character’s death, Pryce has gone on to star in FX’s new show, Taboo, along with Oona Chaplin and Tom Hardy. Coincidentally, his new character also holds a leadership position in Taboo.
Mace Tyrell, the father of Margaery and Loras Tyrell, was played by Roger Ashton-Griffiths. Mace might not have spoke much in Game of Thrones, but that didn’t mean he wasn’t one of the most powerful men in all of Westeros. Powerful, that was, until the High Sparrow took over and his gold didn’t matter all that much anymore.
5. Kristian Nairn
Mace also died during the wildfire explosion at the Sept of Baelor in Season 6. The actor, however, is just fine and has gone on to star with Jonathan Pryce in FX’s series, Taboo. His career won’t be ending any time soon.
Kristian Nairn played Hodor, Bran’s companion. Hodor died in one of the most emotionally distressing death scenes in Game of Thrones to-date. The phrase “hold the door” will never be the same, will it?
6. Michael McElhatton
It might surprise you, but Kristian Nairn has built a huge DJ career over the past few years, even while working on Game of Thrones. Now, he’s still touring with his music. It’s one rave you won’t want to miss!
Michael McElhatton’s character, Roose Bolton, also died in Season 6 of Game of Thrones. We can’t really say anybody was too sad to see him go, even if the death was pretty brutal. Roose was one of the most hated characters in the series.
7. Natalia Tena
It looks like, for now, Michael McElhatton is choosing to say in the same genre as Game of Thrones. That’s perfect, because it seems to suit him just fine. He’s going to star in the next Guy Ritchie movie, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword.
Natalia Tena played Osha, the wildling woman who also befriended Bran and looked after Rickon for most of the series. When Rickon and Osha are captured by Ramsay Bolton, Bolton kills her.
8. Iwan Rheon
We were hoping she’d kill him, but that death scene with Sansa makes up for it. Natalia Tena has gone on to be cast in the pilot for a new CBS drama called Wisdom of the Crowd.
Speaking of that death scene with Sansa…yes, THAT one… Iwan Rheon really should get some kind of award for his acting during Game of Thrones. Ramsay Bolton isn’t an easy character to play, but Iwan totally nailed it. His character was finally, blessedly killed off in the end of season six, and it was so, so satisfying.
9. Kerry Ingram
Iwan Rheon has gone on to be cast as the leading role in a new Marvel series, so don’t worry, we’ll be seeing lots more of his awesome acting. It’s called Inhumans, and it’ll premiere in November of next year (2018) on ABC.
Satisfying death scenes are one thing, but difficult death scenes are another. Kerry Ingram played Shireen Baratheon, the beloved daughter of Stannis Baratheon who had been disfigured from a bout of greyscale when she was a baby. Shireen is one of the purest, gentlest characters on Game of Thrones, and her death in Season 5 was one of the hardest things to watch in TV history.
10. Ian McShane
The actress herself is having a pretty good time, though. She’s gone on to star in a Netflix original show called Free Rein. It’s going to premier sometime later in 2017.
You might not remember this guy. Ian McShane starred as Brother Ray in Episode 6 of Season 7, “The Broken Man”. He’s a peace-loving Westerosi hippie who nurses the Hound back to life. He also kind of might be leading a cult. It’s a little unclear.
11. Essie Davis
His character was killed off with the majority of his followers, which lead the Hound to go on a killing spree. These days, you can find Ian McShane starring in the new series American Gods. It’s totally worth checking out. The show is based on Neil Gaiman’s book of the same name.
Ian McShane wasn’t the only one with a brief but significant role in Season 6. Essie Davis played Lady Crane, the actress who helped Arya while she was working with the Faceless Men in Braavos.
12. Thomas Brodie-Sangster
She’s killed off in Season 6, Episode 8, “No One.” Davis has gone on to work on the Assassin’s Creed film. She’s also working with some other Game of Thrones actors in the Starz’s show, The White Princess, opposite Michelle Fairley.
In the Season 4 finale, “The Children”, Thomas Brodie-Sangster’s character, Jojen Reed, was killed. Jojen was the longtime friend of Bran Stark, and had helped him go North of the Wall and find his true purpose after he lost the use of his legs.
13. Jack Gleeson
Jojen’s death hit everyone pretty hard, especially his sister, Meera. Brodie-Sangster has gone on to reprise his role in Love Actually opposite Liam Neeson in a Red Nose Day short that aired on May 25, 2017.
Ramsay Bolton’s death might have been the most satisfying death on Game of Thrones, but Joffrey Baratheon-Lannister’s death comes as a pretty close second. Joffrey was finally killed off in Season 4, Episode 2, “The Lion and the Rose”, so Margaery didn’t have to marry him. Jack Gleeson was happy to leave the show.
14. Charles Dance
He enjoyed his role, but he didn’t want to be typecast as insane, sadistic characters forever. He starred in a play called Bears in Space in 2016, but hasn’t done much in the way of film since.
Charles Dance is a renowned English actor who played Tywin Lannister on Game of Thrones. Tywin is the patriarch of House Lannister, the father of Jaime, Cersei, and Tyrion. He was also killed off at the end of Season 4.
15. Pedro Pascal
Charles Dance isn’t slowing down anytime soon. He’s gone on to play several roles in several different productions, including Underworld: Blood Wars, the 2016 remake of Ghostbusters, Me Before You, and the BBC production of And Then There Were None.
As far as memorable deaths go, Pedro Pascal’s character, Oberyn Martell, had a pretty memorable one in Season 4. Oberyn was one of the surviving members of the ruling family of Dorne, and was intent on getting revenge for his sister’s death.
16. Rose Leslie
That didn’t go so well, and Oberyn’s final moments as the Mountain smashed his head in are a sight we’ll never be able to unsee. Pascal has gone on to star opposite Matt Damon in The Great Wall, and can also be seen on Netflix’s original series, Narcos.
Horrible, painful deaths abound in Game of Thrones. By now, we should be used to having our hearts ripped out of our chests. Ygritte’s death is no exception. Ygritte is a wildling who fell in love with Jon over the course of the series.
17. Harry Lloyd
When the Wildlings stormed with wall at the end of Season 4, Ygritte died in Jon’s arms, and we ugly-sobbed. Sometimes life imitates art. Rose Leslie and Kit Harington fell in love while working on Game of Thrones, and are still dating. Leslie can be seen in CBS’ new drama, The Good Fight.
Did anyone like Viserys? Obviously someone must have at some point in his life, but when we meet him in Season 1, he’s utterly unlikeable. He’s downright horrible to Dany. We can’t say we were sorry to see him go when Drogo poured that molten gold over his head in Season 1, Episode 6.
18. Jason Momoa
Harry Lloyd’s had quite the acting career. He’s gone on to star in the new spy thriller series Counterpart. The next episode is set to air this July.
Jason Momoa played Dany’s badass husband, Khal Drogo. We really wish we had more than one season with him, because Drogo was one of the best characters on Game of Thrones. Jason Momoa has had quite the acting career.
19. Mark Addy
He starred in Stargate Atlantis before appearing on Game of Thrones. After Thrones, he’s gone on to land the lead role in DC’s Aquaman, as well as in Justice League. He also stars in Netflix’s original series, The Frontier.
If there was anyone who just had to play Robert Baratheon, it was Mark Addy. Robert Baratheon was Ned Stark’s old friend, the King of Westeros, and the leader of Robert’s Rebellion that was responsible for where many of the characters are at the start of the series. Robert died at the end of Season 1, and everything went to hell in a handbasket after that.
20. Glenthin Anthony
After leaving the series, Mark Addy was cast in an Amazon original show called Oasis. The pilot is available for free streaming.
Glenthin Anthony played Renly Baratheon, who was murdered using blood magic and the beginning of Season 2, sending the events of that season spiraling into chaos. Renly was the brother of Robert and Stannis Baratheon, and had tried to claim the Iron Throne for himself.
21. Oona Chaplin
After his character’s death, Gethin Anthony left the show and went on to voice a character in the new Mass Effect game, and also played Charles Manson in NBC’s drama, Aquarius.
It was the episode that left the world silent. You can see all sorts of reactions on Youtube. “The Rains of Castamere” is, probably, the most infamous episode in TV history.
22. Richard Madden
Oona Chaplin’s character, Talisa, was killed during that episode. She was Robb Stark’s wife, and pregnant with their first child when she died. Oona has gone on to star opposite some other Game of Thrones actors and Tom Hardy in FX’s new historical drama, Taboo.
Another victim of the The Red Wedding, Richard Madden’s character, Robb Stark, was murdered just moments after his wife by Roose Bolton in front of his mother. Robb was too young to die. He’d tried so hard to do right by his family and get justice for his father’s death. You were too good for this world, Robb.
23. Michelle Fairley
They didn’t deserve you. After Thrones, Richard Madden went on to star as the Prince in Disney’s live-action remake of Cinderella. He now plays on Amazon’s Oasis and in Medici: Masters in Florence on Netflix.
Michelle Fairley played the fierce matriarch of House Stark, Catelyn. Catelyn tried her very best to lead her family after Ned’s death, but she was doomed to die in “The Rains of Castamere” shortly after her eldest and last son was murdered in front of her.
24. Art Parkinson
After leaving Game of Thrones, Michelle Fairley was cast as a very different matriarch, a queen in Starz’s new hit historical drama, The White Princess.
Art Parkinson played Rickon Stark, the youngest of all the Stark siblings. Rickon disappeared from the series shortly after Season 1 ended, and reappeared in Season 6 only to be murdered by Ramsay Bolton shortly after.
After reprising his role on Game of Thrones, Art went on to voice Kubo in Kubo and the Two Strings, and has also starred in the film, Zoo, which is currently in post-production and is set to premiere sometime later this year.
