Meatless Celebs: Famous People Who Eat Plant-Based

Meghan Markle

Meghan Markle is what she refers to as a "part-time vegan," according to an interview with Best Health in 2016. In her mind, it's good to mix her eating habits up a bit and to listen to what her body is craving at any given time.

"I try to eat vegan during the week and then have a little bit more flexibility with what I dig into on the weekends," she said. To our knowledge her hubby Prince Harry doesn't have any known restrictions. The only thing we do know is that his favorite comfort food is Cottage Pie, a delicious combination of minced beef, onions, and creamy mashed potatoes all combined into one beautiful dish.

Venus Williams

Venus told Health that she transitioned to a plant-based diet after she was diagnosed with Sjögren's syndrome. By ditching meat, she has been able to better maintain inflammation levels and boost her immune system.

When asked why she went veggie, she answered: "I started for health reasons. I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease, and I wanted to maintain my performance on the court. Once I started I fell in love with the concept of fueling your body in the best way possible. Not only does it help me on the court, but I feel like I’m doing the right thing for me."

Beyonce

In early 2018, Beyonce announced her decision to go vegan as she prepared for her performance at Coachella in 2018. She invited her fans to join her effort and as result many joined in. While it was a hit on many levels, some of her critics didn't believe that she was actually going to follow through with her effort to drop meat all together.

Actually, this was the second time the singer went vegan: She partnered up with husband Jay Z for a 22-day vegan challenge in 2013. Critics of Beyonce's claim to eating a plant-based diet say she's not a real vegetarian. Upon, diving into this issue further, it was revealed that Beyonce eats one plant-based meal a day while her hubby enjoys two. Maybe this has changed in recent days and months? We will never really know!

Benedict Cumberbatch

While promoting his latest Avengers film, the talented actor revealed that it was a plant-based diet that kept him slim and action movie-worthy. His reasons for going vegan surrounded his desire to look and feel as amazing as possible. His work can be quite consuming, so optimizing his digestion seemed like an amazing idea.

In an interview with Time Out London, he was asked if he had to eat "anything gross like egg whites." His response was, "No, no — well... I eat a plant-based diet." So, we can say for sure he's a true vegan!

The Glee star has gone between vegetarianism and veganism for years. She has been know to be extremely principled and regimented in the way she cares for her mind and body, so it's not a surprise she can stay committed to plant-based living.

"I keep my home completely vegan, which I think is one of the most important things," she told US Weekly in 2017. "If you keep your home healthy, then, when you’re reaching for snacks, you’re not reaching for bad things. So, I stock it with fruits and vegetables."

Ariana Grande

The pop singer loves animals so much that she's committed her life to veganism. She has shared numerous times that eating vegan feels right for her heart and soul. She is one of a growing number of young performers who have a deep desire to inspire the world to think twice about how they are treating the natural world.

Grande recently told Mirror UK, "I love animals more than I love most people, not kidding. But I am a firm believer in eating a full plant-based, whole food diet that can expand your life length and make you an all-around happier person." 

Miley Cyrus

Miley's Instagram feed is packed with posts about her passion for veganism and how important is to care for animals. Her activism has been hugely influential, as she's inspired numerous fans to follow in her footsteps.

Plus, she's mentioned what a difference the switch makes surrounding inflammation and the aging process. We can only bet that her decisions will lead to her stunning beauty sticking with her into her golden days.

When asked about going plant-based, she told People, "We all love it. It's not only good for our health and makes us feel good, but it is also good for the planet." Her husband Tom Brady also credits changing his diet for helping him take his career to the next level.

Jason Mraz

The singer lives on an avocado farm in San Diego, which goes along with his commitment to eating healthy and deeply connecting with the natural world. His vegan, raw food diet is something he adopted a couple years ago in support one of his band members. After the experience, he just couldn't go back to his old meat-eating ways. 

 "A guy in my band found out that he had type 2 diabetes and felt that the only way he could help himself was to go raw. I did it as a partner for him so it would be a little easier," he told Vegetarian Times. His willingness to join his bandmate led Mraz to completely overhaul his own eating habits and inspire others to do the same.

PETA named her one of the sexiest vegan celebrities in 2014 because of her advocacy efforts. Her passion is fueled both by her desire to make sure animals are being treated with care and to safeguard her mind and body against the questionable effects of consuming meat.

She famously tweeted, "Why are vegans made fun of while the inhumane factory farming process regards animals and the natural world merely as commodities to be exploited for profit?" Her words rang so true with so many people that she inspired thousands to stop eating meat and give plant-based living a try.

Madonna's diet is extremely intense. She follows a strict macrobiotic diet that abolishes the consumption of wheat, eggs, meats, and dairy.

Beyond being a vegetarian, Madonna is a fitness freak; her regimes are notoriously draconian, and she even owns a few gyms in certain cities. Her commitment to caring for her body and working tirelessly to reach her goals has always set her apart from the pack.

Billie Eilish 

Billie was raised vegetarian but wrote about why she moved to veganism on her Tumblr blog in 2018.  Her mother recently launched Support + Feed, providing plant-based meals to frontline workers helping with the coronavirus.

"I went vegan like four years ago. recently said Eilish. "There were a lot of reasons. I love animals and I just think there's no point in creating something out of an animal when the animal is already there. Leave animals alone. Damn. Also I'm lactose intolerant and dairy is horrible for your skin and my skin is VERY aware of that."

Jenna shares with the Los Angeles Times in 2016 that she hasn't eaten meat since she was 11. All it took was watching a TV spot about slaughterhouses and she made up her mind. However, she did admit recently that her husband Channing Tatum eats meat and she's slipped up here and there.

"I certainly encourage veganism, not just for our health, but for the environment and also for the ethical and moral reasons," she said. Recently, was was featured online testing the numerous veggie meats on the market. Her responses are quite entertaining!

The actress has been a vegan for 12 years, and says going vegan gave her more energy and clearer skin. While turning vegan wasn't the easiest choice in the world, once she got into the swing of it she felt both vibrant and amazing.

"Being vegan was not anything I ever wanted to be. I just really was listening to what my body was telling me," she said to W Magazine. 

James Cameron 

The director said he went vegan for reasons related to climate change, but also because it improved his quality of life.

 "You're going to be healthier, you're going to live longer, you're going to look better. You're going to have fewer zits. You're going to be slimmer. You're going to radiate health. You're going to have a better sex drive. That's what shifting away from meat and dairy does," he told Men's Journal.

Woody Harrelson

The actor has been vegan since he was 24 years old. His passion for caring for the environment and caring for his mind and body has been a huge discussion point in the media as he's aged. 

"I used to eat burgers and steak but I would just feel knocked out afterward; I had to give them up. Dairy was first, though," he said to Metro UK. Following this discovery, he decided to make the shift toward eating lots and lots of veggies and healthy food options.

The former teenage heartthrob has made major life changes in recent years, including transitioning to a plant-based lifestyle. He even credits veganism for his svelte physique.

"That's [veganism] completely changed the way that my body works, and the way that I metabolize food, the way it turns into energy, the way that I sleep. It's been brilliant. It’s been great for my exercise, and great for my routine," he told Teen Vogue.

Joaquin Phoenix

Phoenix has been a vegetarian nearly his entire life, starting at age 3. He tells the story of going with his parents on a fishing trip and being horrified when they caught a fish. 

He asked his mom, "Why didn't you tell us that's where meat came from... and [she] didn't know what to say. I feel like I have this memory of seeing her crying." From then on, he was an official veggie. The memory was so troubling that it completely changed his desire for meat.

The actress said she felt like she had no choice but to become vegan after she and Ellen DeGeneres moved to a farm and fell in love with the animals they were raising. As time went on, she realized she couldn't handle eating meat anymore.

"I always thought going vegan would be difficult, but I genuinely don't crave meat or cheese," she told O, The Oprah Magazine. "And I feel happier, like I'm contributing to making the world a less violent place."

Although Silverstone initially adopted a vegan diet for animal-rights reasons, she said she was shocked at how much better she felt overall. 

"I ditched my asthma inhaler, stopped my weekly allergy shots, lost weight, and had a new glow from my skin and hair ... this way of eating transformed me," she said to Food & Wine.

Pfeiffer says she went vegan for health reasons, but also to maintain her complexion. Because a plant-based diet brings down bodily inflammation, she understands that it slows down the aging process and keeps her feeling young and vibrant.

The much-loved actress recently told Urbanette, "Eating a vegan diet — it's just so much healthier — and you avoid a lot of toxins that could age your skin and your body. I really noticed a difference in my skin not too long after switching to fully vegan."

Goulding has been vegetarian for years, and told The Cut in January that she was making the transition to veganism. Her commitment came after she decided to do a lot of research and didn't like what she found along the way.

"Once I fully understood where meat came from … I found that concept quite hard to live with. If you don't need meat to survive, I don't see why you have to have it. Also it makes you feel tired, it makes you feel lethargic, and your body finds it hard to process so much meat all the time," she said.

With the influence of wife Miley Cyrus and good friend Woody Harrelson, Hemsworth is serious about his commitment to plant-based eating. Not only does he feel better about his decision because it makes him feel better, he is committed to caring for the environment.

 He told Men's Fitness, "I have a lot of friends who are vegan. Woody Harrelson was actually one of the original reasons I became vegan, because he's been vegan for, I don't know, 30 years or something. So, with the facts I was gathering, and then just how I was physically feeling, I felt like I had to do something different."

Natalie Portman

She's long been a vegan and takes the movement quite seriously. The Star Wars phenom takes caring for the environment and the lives of animals very seriously. Over the years, she's taken extra precautions to make sure she's getting the vitamins she needs to thrive.

Portman shared what she eats with Harper's Bazaar: "I'm vegan, so I generally have a very clean diet; I usually have oatmeal or avocado toast in the morning ... I take vitamins too — vitamin D, and I'm still on prenatal vitamins. I get B12 shots once a month because it's the one thing you don't get from a vegan diet."
